Its probably come up plenty of times in trivia questions over the past 19 years: who is the Indian bowler with the best figures on ODI debut? Even though the man himself - Hyderabad allrounder Noel David , who played four ODIs in 1997 - faded away, his name probably hasn't been forgotten by true cricket tragics.

David took 3/21 in his first appearance for India back in 1997 and got three more ODIs before he was shown the door for good. On Sunday in Dharamsala , during India's six-wicket win over New Zealand in the first of five matches, allrounder Hardik Pandya became the 14th Indian bowler to take three wickets on ODI debut. His 3/31 are the fourth best figures by an Indian debutant, and chances are he will play more than David and several of the others on that list.

Pandya's feat was not just remarkable for its impact - he claimed three of the five New Zealanders to be dismissed in the first 12 overs - but also earned him the Man-of-the-Match award. That means that after Sandeep Patil in 1980 and Mohit Sharma in 2013, the Baroda allrounder is the third Indian to get the award on ODI debut.

Against Australia at the MCG, Patil had scored 64 off 70 balls and taken one wicket. Haryana seamer Mohit had claimed 2/26 versus Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

This was Pandya's return to the Indian team having been ignored for the tour of Zimbabwe and the two T20Is in Florida against West Indies this year. So far in his career, he had played 16 T20Is - all this year.
