Guwahati Planetarium, which has completed its 25 years of existence, is going to have a state-of-the-art multi-activity centre in its premises with several scientific facilities. The foundation stone of this new annex will be laid by State Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Minister of Science and Technology Keshab Mahanta at 11.00 am on November 22. This new facility, with projected cost of Rs.12.42 crore will have a 5-D theatre, Virtual Reality Lab, Tinkering Lab, auditorium with all modern facilities, exhibition corners, etc. so that science loving people, particularly students, can spend some creative time, apart from watching planetarium shows. The foundation stone will be laid on the occasion of closing ceremony of the silver jubilee celebrations of Guwahati Planetarium, where two new facilities will also be inaugurated by the two Ministers. These are - a Virtual Reality Zone (VR Zone) and the other, an Astronomical Gallery. While the VR Zone has been set up in collaboration with the Design Department of IIT Guwahati, the Astronomical Gallery has been designed and developed by the Creative Museum Designers, Kolkata.
