The Indian government will free up television broadcast airwaves in 470-698 Mhz, which is currently held by pubcaster Doordarshan, to provide mobile broadband services.
India will, thus, join a group of nations that have freed up idle television broadcast airwaves for mobile broadband services.
Even though 90 per cent of these airwaves have remained unused, DD is averse to giving the spectrum, The Economic Times has reported.
The report further stated that the move is aimed at tapping fresh pools of quality data airwaves for 3G and 4G services.
It has been initiated at the International Telecom Union’s (ITU) ongoing World Radio Conference in Geneva.
The 470–698 MHz spectrum has excellent propagation levels, which makes it ideal for both in-building data services and rural coverage.
