MyGov, the citizen engagement platform of the Government of India, has partnered with Google to announce a contest for building the official mobile application of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). With smartphones acting as the first or main point of internet access for a significant number of the Indian citizens, the app will play a vital role in connecting the PMO with the general population.
To make sure the application has features that are relevant to all, the government is going to the people itself to get suggestions on what that want to see in the application.
“Through the PMO app contest we wish to use technology effectively to encourage innovation, aspiration and enhance connectivity. We want to provide every citizen access to the PMO through a mobile device. And since this is an app for the people, we are inviting people to submit ideas on the features they would like to see in their PMO’s mobile app,” said Gaurav Dwivedi, CEO, MyGov.
The app contest has been divided into three phases: the first phase will seek ideas from the public on what they would like to see in the app, the second phase will involve developers sending out mock-ups, and the final phase will include short listing, judging and selecting a team, which will building the app. Like any contest, there are prizes and you can read about them on the contest website.
From the available information so far, it seems like that the PMO application will be available only for Android (at least initially).
MYGov has tied up with Google to be the technical partner for this project. The company will provide its expertise on the matter as well as mentor the finally chosen team of developers, who will build the PMO app.
“To realise the Government’s Digital India vision, we are collaborating with MyGov to develop a mobile app for the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) through a contest.
With this we wish to support the Government’s agenda and provide every citizen access to the PMO’s office through a mobile device,” saif Chetan Krishnaswamy, Country Head- Public Policy at Google India.
