We might be staring at more online censorship in India. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has reportedly issued an ultimatum to streaming services in India — the likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hotstar, Voot, Zee5, ALTBalaji, SonyLIV, and Jio — to form an independent adjudicatory body and adopt a new self-regulation code that might effectively work along the lines of how television content is moderated in India.

Government Said to Push for More Self-Censorship on Streaming

OTT platforms called for this, so much content there which is full of obscenity, vulgar, crude. There is diff between using expressions or emotions to tell story and just employing it to garner viewership. Look at indian web series most of them hardly have substance but there is enormous focus on skin show, abuses and what not.

Well if one wants freedom to exercise artistic liberties then first one should be responsible as industry. Also those who say censoring is no answer in digital age, well purpose of such things is to regulate content and laws do make it difficult for people to get access to stuff which works out well as a solution.

Let's see what kind of rules r brought, quite sure some relaxation would be provided as compared to those laid for tv.

Not only this but YouTube has plenty of sleazy inappropriate desi web series, songs and obscene films... Hope they r also brought under this regulation.

U r right bhai young generation is getting very negatively impacted by all this, also there is huge problem of exploitation of actors in parts of industry involved in making such stuff

Waiting for action against this.

Quality doesn't get affected if language is not vulgar and we would still know characters are having coitus without watching the buttocks of actor and bosom of actress. And these actors and actresses needs to have morals as well. It's not your body, your choice here. Irony is that streaking is a crime but doing it on camera
infront of whole crew making them uncomfortable isn't. Streaming is for public. Not yourselves. Your body is for yourself and your partners. Keep it private.

This OTT fever is also normalising bad language which is as cancerous as what old bollywood did with cigarettes. They made it cooler. I personally didn't knew much bad words until that roast of AIB. Celebrities were doing it. I was like. Yeah, it's cool but it's really not.

I don't get how overcoming challenges and presenting isn't art. But using bad language and n*d*ty is.

And there is no restriction on critisism of government. You can still do it but there has to be a limit. Also this board is supposed to be run on self regulatory just like news channels are doing. It would be nice to hold accountable for any wrong doing.

To all the moral pundits,
Using bad language, having s#x scenes and even n*d*ty is not a sin. There is thing called choice. If someone wants to show his body parts let it be. If you don't want to watch that then don't. It's entertainment or not, it's debatable. But critising it is a bit regressive.
I don't now that why there is always a culture thing which comes in between pure entertainment. Sites like ullu are misusing it, yes but aren't people watching it. So yes the content is being streamed good or bad.
N if you guys thing that this is regressive than what indian tv is showing, a damsel in distress, should also be regulated.
