At I/O 2016 earlier this year, Google unveiled its Daydream virtual reality platform. This platform is essentially Google’s ambitious attempt at a VR platform built right into the Android mobile ecosystem. In line with earlier rumors, the first Daydream VR headset was today revealed at the ongoing Pixel launch event in San Francisco. It’s called the Daydream View.
As far as the design is concerned, Google has used fabric instead of plastic to build the headset, which makes it 30 percent lighter than similar headsets. Just like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, the new Daydream View headset too is bundled with a handheld motion controller. Using the controller, one can perform gestures and interact with the virtual world. Best of all, there is a slot on the headset where you can keep the controller. The Daydream VR will be going on sale some time in November, and will be available in snow, slate and crimson colors. The VR headset is priced at $79, which is approximately Rs 5,200.

Things you wear don't come in one color. Daydream View has three to choose from.

Just like Cardboard, Google is again working towards bringing virtual reality to the masses. But the Daydream platform is much more evolved than the disposable cardboard headsets. At I/O, Google had announced a number of games and apps that are optimized for the Daydream platform. In addition to Google’s own suite of apps, the company has also tied up with the likes of Netflix, Hulu, IMAX, NBA, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft to create special apps for the platform.
One of the interesting announcements on stage tonight was Google’s partnership with Warner Brothers. As a part of this deal, there’s a new game based on the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them where the motion controller transforms into a wand in virtual reality. Google has said it will announce more than 50 partners in the coming weeks and “hundreds more” are set to be announced soon as well.
