Google might make data usage free for Android One

Google seems to be intent on expanding its Android One base by introducing newer features to it. According to a report in The Information, Google might make data usage free for apps on Android One devices.

The report goes on to claim that Google is still talking with third party developers and carriers in upcoming markets such as India for the same. Google might be looking to completely remove mobile data charges, by using a practice called 'zero rating'. 'Zero rating' will let users access apps minus any data charges.

As a result of this initiative, Facebook and Whatsapp will enter into a partnership with various wireless carriers in order to subsidise data costs.

It has been reported that Google wishes to incorporate zero-rating on a broader level so that it can act as middleman between wireless carriers and app developers.

The report goes on to add that brands such as Flipkart, Snapdeal, Redbus and Ola Cabs are also collaborating with Google India to get their apps zero-rated as well. Notably, the Android One program was launched by Google in India in September last year.
