Google recently rolled out Android 7.1.1 Nougat update to the supported Nexus and Pixel devices. One of the key features that came along with the update was the support for GIF images directly from the keyboard. Although Google already provided support for GIF images from its Gboard keyboard app on iOS, this feature was absent on Android devices till the latest update. Now the feature can be used on even more devices as Gboard app has finally made its way to other Android devices as well, as an update to the Google Keyboard app.

Ironically, the search giant's well-received
Gboard keyboard app was exclusive to iOS and absent from its own mobile platform till now. Now, Gboard has come to Android as version 6.0 update to Google Keyboard app. Along with the name change, Gboard brings along the G button for quick search from the keyboard. When the G button is disabled, you will see a pop-out toolbar for access to themes, settings, and one-handed mode.

The GIF button is always visible but is disabled in apps that don't support the feature. Other features on Gboard include Glide typing, emoji search, optional dedicated number row, and more. Gboard comes with support for multiple languages and users can choose up to three active languages with preference for one.
Like most updates, Google is expected to roll out the v6.0 update for Google Keyboard app in phases over the next few days via Google Play. However, if you are too impatient to try out the new Gboard keyboard from Google, you can sideload the APK installation file via APK Mirror.

Google Gboard app for Android goes official, available to download via Play Store

Earlier this week, Google Keyboard was rebranded as Gboard , and today, Google has made it officially available for Android users via Play Store. Gboard app merges the Google’s search features along with the keyboard, allowing users to look for GIFs, emojis, information and more right within the app. The app was initially released for iOS on May 2016, and it took seven months for Google to bring it to the Android OS.

The best part about Gboard keyboard is that the Google Search integration works with all the apps. Google Search icon is located on the top right, just above the keyboard. Tapping on the icon brings new search tap where you can type in your query. By default, the app offers you with three search suggestions — “At what time does the sun set?, Weather, and News.” Here’s where it gets interesting. Say you are in middle of a conversation on WhatsApp and discussing about having pizza to eat, and you tap on the search icon and type ‘pizza.’ This will return some suggestions such as “pizza hut delivery near me”, “pizza hut coupons” and “pizza hut”.

When you see the list of pizza outlets around you, tap on the one you’re interested in ordering from. It will give you information about the place including ratings, business hours, contact number, directions and option to order using Zomato, if applicable. Below this, you will also see a share option to quickly send it to the recipient.

The Google Search feature can also come in handy if you want to check the spelling or meaning of a word before sending it to the recipient. What’s more, you can also send GIFs and emojis within the conversation. Earlier, you were required to download a standalone app such as ‘Giphy’ to copy the emoji and send. However, with GIF search within the Gboard app, you no longer need to install another app.

Other features of Google Keyboard app are also present in the app. This includes slide to type, mic icon for voice dictation, and one handed mode which shrinks the keyboard side to make it easier to type with one hand. The app also supports themes which lets you choose from the pre-defined keyboard themes, or use one of photos as a theme background for the keyboard. There is also an option to turn number row to appear on top of the keyboard. Gboard also supports 36 different languages.

It's a bug in Gboard bro. Same bug was present even on Google keyboard. Predictions doesn't work even on play store. We need to raise in Google product forums.
