Goa government has received a Rs 22-crore proposal from an IT firm to install Wi-Fi at schools and colleges across the state, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar told the state Legislative Assembly today. “There is no specific time frame for setting up of Wi-Fi in educational institutes. However, the department has received a proposal from M/s. ITG for an estimated amount of Rs 22,53,00,114 for implementing (providing) wi-fi for schools and colleges for a period of five years,” Parsekar said in a reply to BJP MLA Subhash Faldesai.

Laxmikant Parsekar said that the IT firm has conducted initial feasibility study to explore the possibility of providing the Wi-Fi internet connectivity in educational institutes across Goa in collaboration with National Informatics Centre and the education department. “Based on the feasibility study, the department also planned to implement Wi-Fi on pilot basis through National Informatics Centre, Goa at 11 educational institutes,” Parsekar added.

Delhi Government is also in talks with private telecom operators to install Wi-Fi connectivity all across the city in a year or two. The government is also in talks for assessing various models to bring the entire national capital under Wi-Fi network in “a year or two.” Gajendra Haldea, a member of the Dialogue and Development Commission of Delhi (DDC), said the government should be more of an “enabler” in rolling out projects such as Wi-Fi. The DDC is an advisory body to the government.
