Glenn McGrath to Team India pacers' rescue?
Legendary Australian pacer Glenn McGrath may be roped in to guide Indian pacers ahead of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.New Delhi: Australian legend Glenn McGrath may be the answer to Mahendra Singh Dhoni's pace woes. The former fast bowler - with 563 Test wickets - may mentor India's international pacers ahead of the 50-over World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next year.
According to a national daily, the MRF Pace Academy, where McGrath is a trainer, has submitted a presentation to the Board of Control for Cricket in India. If accepted, the National Cricket Academy will choose and send a group of bowlers who could improve form McGrath's guidance.
The need to refine the skills of pacers in the country is urgent, especially in the wake of the 4-0 drubbing in New Zealand. McGrath believes several problems plague Indian fast bowlers, citing inability to bowl yorkers as the most jarring. "I haven't seen a single bowler who can bowl six good yorkers. If he can, I am sure the batsmen won't be able to take him apart that easily," he was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
India's current four-pronged attack consisting of Mohammad Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma and Varun Aaron have proved ineffective in the just-concluded ODI series. With limited options, will the experience of a Zaheer Khan rescue the team. "Zaheer's experience is valuable but he should only play if he is fit," said 43-year-old McGrath.
A leading new-ball operator during his times, McGrath can be a god-sent for Indian cricket if he agrees to guide Ishant and Company ahead of the 2015 World Cup, which Dhoni's Devils have to defend.
