Gionee had introduced its P7 Max earlier this month, and the Android smartphone is now up for sale in India. The phone is priced at Rs 13,999 and competes with the likes of LeEco Le 2, Moto G4 Plus, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and the newly introduced Honor 8 Smart and Holly 3 in the affordable segment. Featuring a metal unibody design, the Gionee P7 Max offers a 13-megapixel rear camera and 3GB of RAM.
The Gionee P7 Max features a 5.5-inch HD (1280×720 pixels) IPS display and under its hood is a MediaTek MT6595 chipset coupled with 3GB of RAM. The phone further draws its juice from a 3,100mAh battery. For photography, the Gionee P7 Max continues with the 13-megapixel/5-megapixel combination and runs on Android Marshmallow 6.0-based Amigo UI 3.2 out-of-the-box. Contrary to its competitors, the P7 Max does not come with a fingerprint sensor, but in terms of looks the phone bears resemblance to other Gionee smartphones from the S series like the S6 Pro and the S6s. Interestingly, the rear panel design appears to be inspired by the Asus Zenfone 3 which also features concentric-circle pattern.
Gionee P7 Max specifications
The 5.5-inch display on the Gionee P7 Max offers an HD resolution at 1280×720 pixels with a density of 267ppi. In terms of storage, the phone comes with 32GB of on-board memory, which can be further boosted up to 128GB via microSD card. The phone is powered by a MediaTek MT6595 octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz.
If one compares it with the LeEco Le 2, priced at Rs 11,999, then users are up for a different audio experience owing to a USB Type-C port for audio. The Le 2 is one of the first phones in the market to ditch the standard 3.5mm headphone jack to achieve an overall slimmer profile. The Gionee P7 Max doesn’t come with the new type of USB and features the regular microUSB 2.0. According to PhoneRadar , Gionee’s smartphone has gone on sale through offline channels in the country.
If users are looking at smartphone photography which is slowly becoming a trend with more feature-laden phones available in the market, then the Gionee P7 Max loses the competition to Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, Le 2, and Moto G4 Plus all of which feature a 16-megapixel rear camera. The camera on P7 Max features a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and comes with features like geo-tagging, auto-focus, HDR, and Panorama. The phone is further capable of capturing full HD videos at 30fps. From its list of competitors, the Le2 is offering more megapixel count in the front with an 8-megapixels camera
Competing head-to-head with the Gionee P7 Max is Lenovo ZUK Z1, priced at Rs 13,499. The phone runs on Cyanogen OS and packs a robust 4,100mAh battery. However, where the predecessor to the Z2 Plus lacks is expandable storage where the Gionee P7 Max takes the cake. In terms of connectivity, the Gionee P7 Max offers 4G support, GPS, A-GPS, Micro USB 2.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth v2.0.
Recently, Gionee also introduced its S6 Pro smartphone in India with a price tag of Rs 23,999. The smartphone with its metal unibody design boasts a 5.5-inch full HD IPS display with 2.5D curved glass and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. Powered by MediaTek’s 64-bit Helio P10 octa-core processor and 4GB of RAM, the S6 Pro is a selfie-focused smartphone with a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash which is coupled with an 8-megapixel front snapper. With USB Type-C, the S6 Pro adds to the list of new-age smartphones which have adopted the new standard in charging and data exchange.
Despite a convincing price-tag, the Gionee P7 Max appears to compromise on certain new but important features like the fingerprint sensor and a full HD display which are being offered with competing devices at a lesser price. While some might argue that a fingerprint sensor need not be a mandate in newer phones, given the recent focus on user privacy and surveillance, having a sensor on a phone could offer customers more amount of security while using their device. When the P7 Max was launched in Nepal last week, it was made available in color choices of Gold and Grey. The company is yet to officially send a word about the price and availability in India.
