BENGALURU: Starting April 1, get ready to pay more for power, water, fuel, property transactions and even holidays, entertainment and beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). A series of decisions from public utilities for the city and taxes announced in the Union and State budgets will ensure that cost of living will go up suddenly, across the board.

While electricity prices were hiked on Wednesday by an average of 9 per cent, pro-rata charges for water supply were hiked on Monday and will be effective in the April billing cycle. This adds to already announced hikes in fuel prices in the State budget and revision of property tax and guidance values.

Holidays and entertainment will take a hit, and bus ticket prices are set to increase following an almost 50 per cent hike in motor vehicle taxes. Cable and DTH prices will also go up as entertainment tax was hiked in the State budget.

While the average increase in electricity tariff is around 48 paise per unit, the actual hike in tariff will be between 15 and 50 paise per unit across different categories. Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission has allowed an increase in fixed cost in the range of Rs. 5 per kW to Rs. 10 per kW for LT and HT consumers.
