German car parts & TV maker Blaupunkt to launch smartphones and wearables in India next year...
NEW DELHI: German car accessories and television maker Blaupunkt has ventured into mobile phone accessories, and will begin selling them first from the Indian market before taking the products to other Saarc countries, top executives said.
Blaupunkt will also launch smartphones, tablets and wearables in the Indian market next year, but will take into account profitability and business demand before deciding on the price segments it plans to enter.
“We are entering the less price sensitive market segment, which is conservatively more than Rs 10,000 crore, which has grown about 20% over last year and is expected to grow about 25% in 2017 on-year,” said Andrzej Cebrat, managing director of global intellectual property development at Blaupunkt.
“India builds the case study lesson for global markets. If we are successful in the Indian market, the reviews we get here will be valid in other markets,” he added, when asked about entering a highly cluttered and competitive market, in both smartphones and accessories segments. Cebrat added that the company was open to manufacturing the products, including phones, in India, if the volumes supported the business case.
The company expects sales of up to 10 million mobile phone accessory units by the end of next year in India, 70% coming from the offline channel. More than 80% of the company’s global revenue of $800 million comes from car infotainment products and televisions.
About 5% share comes from smartphones launched in Indonesia, Africa and tablets launched in Europe. The car infotainment brand has signed an exclusive brand licensing agreement with Delhi-based distributor Vidur & Co, which will invest Rs 20 crore over the next 18 months in establishing sales channels to online and offline retailers across India. Sales from online portals Amazon, Snapdeal and eBay India begin from Wednesday, while talks are on with Flipkart and Tata Cliq to expand tie-ups.
In the offline space, the products will be sold through large format retail store chains and standalone retailers across the country, that still make up more than a third of the country’s retail market. Blaupunkt will introduce USB cables priced between Rs 250 and Rs 750, wired and wireless earphones between Rs 300 and Rs 600, power banks between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000, starting with 10,000 mAh capacity, and car chargers. It will also launch VR headsets, starting from Rs 500 and going up to Rs 3,500.
