The Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) shot off a notice to the recently launched Indian Junior Premier League (IJPL), a Twenty20 event launched two months ago, which has Gambhir as brand ambassador.

Promoted by Delhi-based businessman Dinesh Kapoor, the league first caught the BCCI's eye when Gambhir sent out a tweet on September 9 which read: 'New horizons with @IJPLT20. A national tournament for junior cricket aspirants'. The IJPL mentions former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes, Caribbean T20 specialist Kieron Pollard and Himachal Pradesh cricketer Rishi Dhawan are the mentors.

Sources close to Gambhir, on Saturday (December 17), confirmed the cricketer has received the notice and said he has already replied, confirming his withdrawal from the league. However, there are those who are now pointing fingers at the BCCI, accusing the board of double standards.

"Gambhir decided to promote a league knowing that he wasn't contracted with the BCCI at the time but was sent a notice immediately . MS Dhoni had promoted the UAE-based Masters Champions League (MCL) and had sent out a video message supporting the league despite being the India captain. But the BCCI had no objection to that," a source in the know of things said.

"Rhiti Sports, the company associated with Dhoni, also bought a team in the MCL but it all conveniently went unnoticed. Gambhir's association despite the fact that he doesn't have a contract with BCCI right now turned out to be a problem," the source added.

The IJPL T20, announced as a talent hunt for boys aged 14 to 18 years, and to be played with the pink ball across 22 cities was unveiled in Gambhir's presence on September 15 in New Delhi. After an acrimonious legal battle with the Essel Group's now defunct Indian Cricket League (ICL), the BCCI has always shown a 'once-bitten-twice shy' approach in dealing with any private cricket leagues sprouting in the country . "Which is perfectly understandable but why have one policy for Dhoni and another for Gambhir?" said an executive associated with the league.
