Another set of fun facts of 2016 are here, and this time it’s from Google. The search engine giant has shared the most important things that the Indians searched on Google this year. And the stats show that, in the year 2016, India finally moved beyond Cricket, as Rio Olympics 2016 emerged as the top trending search query on Google in 2016. Following up close was a game that took the world by storm this year, Pokemon Go.

Also among the top searches of the year were the Euro 2016, Salman Khan starrer Sultan, Rajnikanth’s this year’s Kabali, Apple’s iPhone 7, IPL 2016, US President-elect Donald Trump, Udta Punjab for all its controversy with the sensor board and India’s badminton player PV Sindhu, who represented our country at the Rio Olympics this year, becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal.

Also interesting is the top personalities that the Indians searched for. The US presidential elections have always been closely watched in India but this year the interest was further heightened, with the so-called controversial American elections. US President Donald Trump emerged on top of the list of trending personalities in India on Google Search. Following him were the world-class performances by Indian female athletes at the world’s biggest sporting event. Indian badminton star and olympic medalist, PV Sindhu took the second spot in the overall trending personality searches.

The latest social media obsession Sonam Gupta (bewafa hai!), made a surprise entry at third position while Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar took the fourth spot. They were followed by Bollywood actress Disha Patani who recently made her Bollywood debut in a biopic on Indian cricketing star M S Dhoni. Indian female wrestler and Olympic champion Sakshi Malik also featured among the top 10 trending personalities on Google.

The most interesting of all the top searched lists is the top trending Bollywood actor’s. This year, the Khans had a tough fight with Sushant Singh Rajput emerging is the most searched actor of the year, followed by Kabir Bedi, Harshvardhan Kapoor, and Pulkit Samrat. Even among the actresses, the newbies made to the top of the list with, Disha Patani leading the list, followed by Urvashi Rautela, Pooja Hegde, and Mandana Karimi.

Also, taking a quick look at the year’s top news moments that captured India’s attention reveals that even though Olympics topped the charts, the historic win for Donald Trump in US elections and Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union (Brexit) reflected on India’s rising involvement and interest around global issues. The 7th Pay commission, Demonetization, and the strategic surgical strike on terror groups caught everyone’s attention and generated a great deal of search curiosity among Indian users.
