PANAJI: Former Goan footballer Andrew De Sousa breathed his last at a hospital in Dona Paula after prolonged illness.

The 69-year old former footballer, who died yesterday, is considered one of the best centre-forwards Goa has ever produced and was nick-named 'Goan Pele'.

The footballer represented Vasco for 13 years and provided a crucial link in the then famous A-B-C-D combination of Andrew, Bernard, Catao and Domnic.

Andrew started his football career in 1962 but he got a major break in 1969 when he got an opportunity to represent the national side.

He was also part of Goa's first state team that took part in the National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy at Chennai in 1964.

Andrew finally decided to hang his boots in 1975. Vasco SC president, Vinod Parkkot in his condolence message described Andrew as a "genius who will be remembered by Goans for his striking prowess".

President of Goa Football Association Shrinivas Dempo and General Secretary Alberto Colaco also mourned the death of the footballer.
