Handset maker Lenovo and ecommerce major Flipkart said that they have jointly sold over 15 million Lenovo and Moto-branded smartphones in the country till date, making the former the No 1 smartphone player in the online space with close to 25% market share, followed by Xiaomi.
Lenovo, which cited IDC data to claim that one in every four smartphones sold online was either Lenovo or Moto, said that it won’t be increasing prices of phones within this fiscal, in the wake of memory and display costs going up from the supply side.
Extending its popular K series, Lenovo on Tuesday launched K6 Power smartphone in India exclusively with etailer Flipkart, and priced it aggressively at Rs 9,999. The K6 Power will support all 4G LTE bands in India as well as VoLTE .
“We are the No 2 smartphone brand by value and volume in India and have been a dominating player in the online space since last 7 quarters,” said Sudhin Mathur, Executive Director, Lenovo Mobile Business Group India.
“We won’t be raising prices within this fiscal,” he said, when asked whether the company would take that call as component prices were rising on the back end.
Having sold more than 6 million Lenovo devices in the last two years, the company said that its devices have been runaway hit among Flipkart customers.
“With the launch of K6 Power, we hope to build on this successful association, and our commitment to make the most differentiated smartphone technology accessible to our 100 million+ customers,” said Ajay Yadav, Vice President, Mobiles, Flipkart.
Lenovo is now aiming for the top spot in the smartphone market where it trails No 1 Samsung which has a 23% share as of September-end, up 8% sequentially. Lenovo has a 9.6% share of smartphones in the third quarter of this year, IDC said.
Mathur said the company intends to improve on this, and also make a mark in the premium segment within smartphones, with Moto Z and mods – or modular attachments.
