In a bid to strengthen its position and ward off threat from Amazon.in, home-grown etailer Flipkart is gearing up to join the make-in-India cohort. Besides, the private label for India-made goods — ranging from electronics to apparels — will help Flipkart garner the government’s attention.
The online marketplace’s Executive Chairman Sachin Bansal is prepping a team to handle the India-made private label business, The Economic Times reported on Monday. Three persons privy to the etailer’s plans told the newspaper that "the subsidies and tax benefits for make-in-India products and the favourable government attention make the opportunity exciting".
A Flipkart representative confirmed the make-in-India plan while declining to divulge further information.
Flipkart had in the past experimented with electronic goods under DigiFlip brand but the move failed to generate a huge response. Bansal’s latest initiative is to reduce dependence on China-made products and bolster the creation of manufacturing in India.
Flipkart looks to jump on board the makeinIndia bandwagon
