India begin Junior Hockey World Cup campaign against Canada

India will open their campaign against Canada in the FIH Junior Hockey World Cup to be played in Lucknow from December 8 to 18.

With only one rest day, hockey fans will be treated to 10 days of high-speed, action packed hockey at the Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium. There, the world’s rising stars will battle it out to be crowned junior men’s world champions in what will be one of the most competitive hockey events of the year.

The pool stages will take place between December 8-12 before the classification matches begin on December 14. The medal matches will then be held on December 18.

Besides India taking on Canada, New Zealand and Japan kick-off what will be a hugely entertaining opening day which will also see reigning champions Germany start their title defence against Spain.

Day two highlights include Oceania champions Australia match against Korea, while the game between 2014 bronze medallists Netherlands and Pakistan is sure to offer plenty of excitement.

Super Saturday then follows, with a battle between the Pan-American and Oceania champions Argentina and Australia possibly the pick of the day, followed later by a renewal of an old rivalry between India and England.

Belgium versus Netherlands is bound to offer a few surprises on Sunday, with Pakistan’s match against African junior champions Egypt another crucial game as the pool stages near completion.

Amongst the last matches, some tough challenges await Austria who play Australia, and South Africa who take on India in the concluding game of the pool stage on Monday evening.

India are placed in Group D alongside Canada, South Africa and England.

“The final combination has been formed keeping in mind the recent results. I believe this team combination is the best we have in junior hockey and the boys are ready both mentally and physically to do everything it takes to stand on the podium,” said Roelant Oltmans.

“Though our goal is to win the gold medal, we will be taking it match-by-match and the best part is that this group knows how to keep their emotions in check,” he added.

Harjeet Singh to lead India at the Junior Hockey World Cup

Midfielder Harjeet Singh will lead the 18-member Indian men’s hockey team in the Junior World Cup to be held from December 8 to 18. While the 20-year-old midfielder from Kurali in Punjab has been named as the captain, defender Dipsan Tirkey will shoulder the responsibilities of the vice-captain.

Harjeet has been instrumental in the junior team’s success in recent times. He also led the colts in Valencia, Spain last month where they won the four-nation Invitational Tournament beating Germany in the final. Earlier this year, Harjeet was also named as the ‘Jugraj Singh Upcoming Player of the Year (Men–21)’ at the Hockey India Annual Awards and was rewarded for his consistency with a call-up in the senior men’s squad for the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament in April where the team finished second behind world champions Australia.

Harjeet was also part of the Indian senior men’s team that won the silver medal at the FIH Champions Trophy in London this year where he replaced ace midfielder Sardar Singh.

Tirkey, on the other hand, is a fireball on the pitch. The 18-year-old from Sundargarh in Odisha had led the Indian team to a splendid win at the EurAsia Cup in Russia earlier this year followed by the England tour where they beat Scotland senior men’s team, Hampstead and Westminster, and won two matches against England.

“Harjeet has special abilities in terms of keeping the team together and motivated them which is a rare thing in players of this age. Those are the features we always look for in a captain. Dipsan too shows qualities of a leader and has done consistently well in the build up to the World Cup,” stated chief coach of senior men’s side Roelant Oltmans, who is helping junior coach Harendra Singh ahead of the upcoming mega-event.

Junior Hockey World Cup: Dominant India Thrash Canada in Opener

Rated as strong favourites for the title, hosts India started their campaign on a resounding note spanking Canada 4-0 in their opening Pool D match of the Junior Hockey World Cup at the Major Dhyan Chand Astroturf Stadium, here on Thursday.

India were by far the better side on display and scored through Mandeep Singh (35th minute), Harmanpreet Singh (46th), Varun Kumar (60th) and Ajit Pandey (66th) to garned full three points from the encounter.

There was always uncertainity about the conduct of the match late in the evening due to dense fog, which forced the International Hockey Federation to start the game 15 minutes early.

Going by form and expectations, India were considered as overwhelming favourites against Canada and the hosts started on expected note even though they were little shaky and nervous to start with.

But as time progressed, the Indian colts got their acts together and started attacking the Canadian defence relentlessly.

Canada, who has 13 Indian origin players in its 18-member squad, on the other hand were pretty happy to sit back and defend and rely on counter attacks to surprise the Indians.

The hosts had the first chance in the fourth minute but Armaan Qureshi reverse hit from close range struck the side netting.

India earned two back-to-back penalty corners in the 12th minute but on both occasion Harmanpreet Singhs tries were saved by Canadian custodian Iqwinder Gill.

Injury-return Mandeep Singh, who played for the senior side on many occasions in the past, then came close to giving India the lead but his reverse shot from a goal mouth melee was saved by Candaian goalkeeper Gill.

It continued to be a story of missed chances for India, this time Parvinder Singh, who hit the left wood work from Sumits pass from inside the circle.

India finally tasted success in the final minute of the first half through Mandeep, who found himself in the right position at the right time to hand India the lead from a move that was initiated by Harmanpreet.

India stepped up the pressure after the change of ends and missed a few chances in the initial periods of the second half.

In the 44th minute skipper Harjeet Singh missed when he shot wide from inside the circle.

India were awarded a penalty stroke after Canadian defence wrongly saved Varuns flick from their fourth penalty corner and Harmanpreet stood up to double the lead.
Varun then registered his name in the scoresheet by scoring from India's fifth penalty corner after Harjeet fumbled in stopping the push. Four Minutes from the final hooter, Ajit made the scoreline 4-0 in favour of India after receiving a pass from Manpreet (Jr).

India will next England in their next pool match on Saturday. Earlier in the day, England defeated South Africa 4-2 in another Pool C encounter.

For England Edward Horler (5th, 9th) converted two penalty corners while Peter Scott (11th), Jonathan Griffiths (62nd) were the other goal getters.
