Roger Federer made light work of his tricky second-round assignment against Juan Martin Del Potro at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

The third seed, looking to break a winless streak that stretches back 10 tournaments, claimed a 6-4 7-5 win over his Argentinian opponent, who mustered just one unsuccessful break point in the match.

Number-eight seed Tomas Berdych knocked out Del Potro's countryman Juan Monaco 7-6(2) 6-0 to join Federer in the third round, with James Blake a 6-4 6-2 winner over Fabio Fognini.

Stanislav Wawrinka, seeded 16th, was the biggest casualty of the day's first-round outings, losing 6-3 4-6 1-6 to Andrey Golubev.

Three other seeds did ensure their progress with Nicolas Almagro beating fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes 7-6(5) 6-4, Gilles Simon seeing off Jurgen Melzer (3)6-7 6-3 7-5 and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeating Marin Cilic 6-3 6-4.

Also through to the second round after wins were Radek Stepanek, Ivan Dodig, Ivo Karlovic, Janko Tipsarevic, Nikolay Davydenko, Kevin Anderson, Michael Llodra and Julien Benneteau.

In the women's draw fourth seed Maria Sharapova led the charge into the third round with a 6-1 6-3 win over Anastasia Rodionova.

The fifth and sixth seeds Li Na and Petra Kvitova also moved safely through, seeing off Lucie Safarova and Chanelle Scheepers respectively.

Marion Bartoli, seeded eight in Cincinnati, trounced Alona Bondarenko 6-1 6-2.

There were also eight first-round matches, with the unseeded Serena Williams victorious over Lucie Hradecka 6-3 7-6(5) in the eye-catcher.

Four other seeds, Sam Stosur (10), Jelena Jankovic (13), Shuai Peng (16) and Yanina Wickmayer (17), all passed through safely, joining fellow victors Nadia Petrova, Maria Kirilenko and Flavia Pennetta in round two.
