Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that his
company would spend $1 million to help fund
local apps in India. The initiative is aimed at
promoting local and more relevant apps in
India, which will allow Indian users, particularly
those not familiar with English, to use internet
in a better way.
"We will spend $1 million to help developers
build and scale apps that will help farmers and
migrant workers and students and women,"
said Zuckerberg. "We're also going to extend a
programme called FB Start that will provide
$40,000 to developers who build locally-
relevant apps."
According to Facebook a recent report by
McKinsey & Company found that one of the
leading barriers to internet adoption is the lack
of relevant, local and multilingual content and
services online.
"Today we're announcing the Internet.org
Innovation Challenge in India, an effort to
recognize those who are working to make the
internet more relevant to four populations that
are currently under-served in India: women,
students, farmers and migrant workers," said a
Facebook spokesperson.
According to details shared by Facebook, the
company would present four $250,000
Innovation Challenge Award prizes: one to the
leading app, website or service or idea that
best meets the needs of each of the
designated population categories. Two $25,000
Impact Award prizes will also be granted in
each category.
Winners will be announced at Mobile World
Congress in March 2015.
