Facebook and Reliance to host press event tomorrow; could launch Internet.org in India

Facebook and Reliance Communications are hosting an event tomorrow in Mumbai.
“One launch will make a billion dreams takeoff,” reads the invite. At this press event, Facebook is believed to announce its partnership with Reliance Communications (RCom) to launch Internet.org in India.

The invite also hints at connecting a large number of people.
According to a report by Medianama, earlier this month it came across a message from Internet.org over Wi-Fi in India, that read, “You must be on Reliance network to use Internet.org. If you’d like to access these websites for free, use a SIM card from Reliance.” However, Reliance and Facebook refused to comment. This also hints at the possibility of Internet.org making its way to India tomorrow.

Facebook has already launched the Internet.org app in five countries namely, Ghana, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya and Colombia. In fact, it launched the app in Colombiajust last month, which is the first nation in Latin America to receive the new Internet.org service, in partnership with local mobile phone provider Tigo.

This means, India could be the first country in Asia to get the Internet.org app.
With Internet.org app, Facebook offers free access to some apps like Facebook, Messenger, BBC News and Wikipedia, to name a few.
On one side, it seems like a great way to connect people and bring Internet access to millions. However, on the other side, it also raises questions like who would be paying the carriers for using their network, who decides which apps and services can be accessed for free under Internet.org and so on. This also seems to question net neutrality, which says everyone should have equal access to the Internet.
