As England pass 400 run mark for the second time in their history; they also finish the innings by scoring the highest team total ever recorded in the format. Hosts surpassed Sri Lanka’s previous record of 443 which was set in July 2006 against the Netherlands. England innings saw opener Alex Hales surpass Robin Smith’s 23-year-old record for the highest ODI score of 167 not out against Australia in Birmingham in 1993. Hales reached the milestone by pulling Hasan Ali to the mid-wicket boundary.

Joe Root, who scored 85 from 86 balls, added 248 runs with Hales for the second wicket partnership. In doing so, duo set England’s third-highest partnership in one-day internationals.

Meanwhile, Jos Buttler smashed six sixes and three fours to get to his half-century and finished 90 not out while captain Eoin Morgan remained not out after scoring 57 off 27 balls.
