Square Enix’s Dragon Quest X (DGX) is one of the most awaited RPGs for the Nintendo Wii platform, and was recently introduced by series creator Yuji Horii in its first official trailer. The trailer revealed that Dragon Quest X is not going to be just an RPG, instead, an “online RPG” entitled Dragon Quest X Online: Rise of the Five Tribes. This could mean that it is either an MMORPG, or, a group-based PvP or co-op style online game.
Though the reveal trailer has been pulled from YouTube by Square Enix, it showed the regular Dragon Quest fare, though it bears the most similarity to Dragon Quest VIII in terms of animation style, and Dragon Quest IX in terms of MMO-style of play. Character classes include elves, dwarves, and ogres, and the game features many of the monsters from previous instalments, like the Slimes.
DGX will feature dynamic character modelling, using the standard character-generation system from previous instalments, including enhancements and equipment changes. What’s new is the ability to play as an ogre or an elf, as well as the team-based challenges.
As icing on top of the cake, the latest instalment to the venerable RPG series will see a version made for the upcoming Wii U console as well – one that will have improved graphics, and even be playable cross-platform against the Wii. Some 3DS functionality is apparently also on the cards – such as character trading.
Dragon Quest X is apparently the first instalment of the series that will be produced inhouse at Square Enix, instead of being outsourced to developers like Level-5.
