A fast track court in New Delhi today awarded the death sentence to all four convicts in the December 16 Delhi gangrape case, stating that the heinous crime qualifies as 'rarest of the rare'.
The accused were given the maximum sentence on every charge against them.
Soon after news filtered out, minutes after the hearing began, that the judge had pronounced the death penalty for all four convicts, crowds of agitators gathered outside began to applaud.
The lawyer for one of the convicts emerged and confirmed that the death sentence had indeed been awarded to all four.
The victim's mother, who was inside the courtroom, told reporters, "Dil ko sukoon mil gaya." The victim's father later said the punishment matched the gravity of the crime.
A P Singh, one of the defence lawyers, had an emotional outburst outside the courtroom, alleging a political conspiracy. He said, "The court has buckled under political pressure by giving the death penalty for all the four accused. If after today there are rapes in India, then I will appeal appeal to the high court against this order.
