New Delhi: Gary Kirsten, the former India and South Africa coach, was on Tuesday named as coach of IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils. The Delhi-based franchise announced Kirsten's appointment in a tweet from its official handle. This is Kirsten's first stint as coach of an IPL team.

"The #DelhiDaredevils is delighted to welcome @Gary_Kirsten as Head Coach. He will work with Team Mentor TA Sekar and Eric Simons," the franchise tweeted. "@Gary_Kirsten says the decision to join #delhidaredevils was an easy one. It will be his first experience with an @IPL team."

Kirsten, 45, coached India for two years until April 2011, helping them win the World Cup the same year and become the No. 1 Test team. As coach of his native South Africa, Kirsten oversaw a hugely successful tour of England in 2012 that saw the team secured the Test series 2-0 and go to No. 1 in the world. His tenure ended on July 31 after the Champions Trophy. He had been appointed coach of South Africa in June 2011.

The current Daredevils squad includes several players who played under Kirsten for India, namely Virender Sehwag, Irfan Pathan and Ashish Nehra. Delhi finished last in IPL6, with just three wins from 16 matches. Eric Simons, who was India's bowling coach and has worked with Kirsten before, remains with the franchise.
