Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes passed
away on Thursday after getting hit on the head
by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match.
Hughes was 25 and would have celebrated his
birthday on November 30.
Earlier also there have been incidents on the
cricket field, which were equally fatal and
grievous. Here is a mention of few incidents to
have happened on the cricket pitch.
Phil Hughes
The talented Australian cricketer Phil Hughes
died on November 27, two days after getting
hit on the head by a bouncer playing in the
Sheffield Shield. He was rushed to the
hospital, but never regained conciousness.
Raman Lamba
The Indian batsman died after getting hit by a
ball on the head while fielding at silly mid-on in
a Bangladesh cricket league match in February
1998.He underwent a surgery and the blood clot was removed, but after three days Lamba
succumbed to his injuries. He was 38 at the
time of his death.
Abdul Aziz
17-year-old Abdul Aziz of Pakistan got hit on
the chest by a delivery and fell unconscious.
He passed away on the way to the hospital.
Nari Contractor
Nari Contractor was lucky to survive a fatal hit
on his head he received from a Charlie
Griffith's delivery in the 1960s. India was
touring the West Indies with Contractor being
the captain and those days helmets didn't
exist. He remained unconscious for six days
but after recovering he never played an
international match.
Saba Karim
During the Asia Cup, 2000, a Anil Kumble
delivery deflected off the batsman's bat and
caught Saba Karim flush in the right eye. It
required immediate surgery and sadly the
condition forced him to quit international
cricket.
Mark Boucher
Mark Boucher's incident was quite similar to
Karim's while keeping without a helmet. A
Imran Tahir delivery flicked the bails, which hit
him straight in the eye. This incident ended
Boucher's long international career.
Brian Lara
The former West Indian batsman was hit by a
vicious Shoaib Akhtar bouncer during the 2004
Champions Trophy semifinal. After getting hit
on the helmet, Lara collapsed to the ground.
Steve Waugh and Jason Gillespie
During Australia's Galle Test match against Sri
Lanka in 1999, Steve Waugh and Jason
Gillespie had a fatal collision while going for a
catch together. Waugh suffered a broken nose
and Gillespie broke his leg.
Stuart Broad
This year in August, Stuart Broad was hit on
the nose by a Varun Aaron's rising delivery.
While going for the pull shot, Broad got a top-
edge and the ball crashed on to his nose.
