MUMBAI: Confusion reigned supreme on Friday as the BCCI claimed that the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has prematurely withdrawn from the ongoing India tour due to payment dispute with players.
However, the WICB later clarified it has not taken any decision to discontinue the tour.
“The West Indies Cricket Board advises that, contrary to media reports, it has taken no decision to discontinue the ongoing tour to India,” WICB said in a statement. The WICB said it will make a further statement after the conclusion of the fourth ODI.
The WICB and West Indies Players Association had signed a new agreement last month that was reportedly rejected by the senior players leading to the current impasse.
The tour involves five ODIs, three Tests and a Twenty20 International. Four ODIs have already been played with one more ODI to go. India has won the series 2–1, with one match being abandoned due to cyclone in Andhra Pradesh.
If the tour is indeed cancelled, the BCCI’s broadcast partner, Star India, will have to incur loss in ad revenue. Contrarily, it will also help Star to save on media rights fee that it pays to the BCCI. Star is currently paying Rs 322.5 million per match to the BCCI.
Earlier in the day, BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said that the West Indies cricket team has decided to pull out of its remaining tour of India over payment dispute with its cricket board.
“The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has informed the BCCI of its decision to cancel the rest of its ongoing tour to India because of a dispute with its players, and has advised the BCCI that its players will return home immediately,” he said.
“The reason given by the WICB is that there were internal issues among their boys. The BCCI will be going to the ICC and is planning to sue the WICB and claim for damages. We will not take this lying down as we have cooperated with them in every aspect,” Patel said.
Expressing displeasure over what he called a unilateral decision by the WICB, Patel said, “The BCCI wishes to inform all its stakeholders, especially ardent fans of the Indian cricket team, that this is a unilateral decision taken by the WICB and its players, in spite of several appeals to the WICB to honour its commitment and complete the series,” Patel said.
He also threatened to take the matter to the ICC to protect its interests. “The BCCI will pursue all options available to protect its rights, while seeking appropriate action from the ICC to ensure that its interests and those of the game at large will not suffer any damage due to such acts of indiscretion,” he said.
