China says iPhone is a threat to national security

Chinese state media called the iPhone a threat to national security today because the smartphone can record a user's location

Chinese state media called the iPhone a threat to national security today because the smartphone can record a user's location.
State-run CCTV said that the "Frequent Locations" function could potentially be used to leak information on where a person had been and when.A researcher interviewed by the television channel said that information was "extremely sensitive data" and that it could reveal "state secrets".

Apple says that Frequent Locations "will keep track of places you have recently been, as well as how often and when you visited them, in order to learn places that are significant to you. This data is kept solely on your device and won't be sent to Apple without your consent. It will be used to provide you with personalized services, such as predictive traffic routing."
Apple was not available for comment.

The company has come under fire from Chinese state media in the past, facing accusations of providing user data to US spy agencies and calls for "severe punishment".Google's services have also been disrupted in China for over a month, while the central government procurement office has banned new government computers from using Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system.Other US hardware firms such as Cisco and IBM have experienced a backlash in China from what analysts and companies have termed the 'Snowden Effect', after US spying revelations released last year by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.
