While Purchasing a Mobile Handset check the SAR value of the mobile phone. It can be searched on internet if its model number & make is known.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked mobile handset users to check the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) value of the mobile handset before purchasing it.
The SAR value helps in determining the radiation a handset emits. It is also an indication of the amount of radiation that is absorbed by the body over a given time. The lower the SAR value the lower is the radiation the phone emits, which is recommended.
The DoT has also asked mobile phone manufacturers in the country to upload SAR values of each handset on their websites to make it easier for buyers. The data would also be uploaded on the DoT website.
The DoT has also set a deadline that after September 1, 2013, only handsets with revised SAR value of 1.6 watt/kg averaged over 1 gram tissue would be permitted to be manufactured or imported.
However, mobile handsets with existing designs, which are compliant with 2 watt/ kg averaged over 10 gram tissue will continue up to August 31, 2013.
The guidelines also advice a mobile phone user to limit his length of mobile calls, use landline phones in case there is a choice, use the phone when the reception is good and bring it into contact with the ear only after the call is connected, among others.
