While 2-step verification (or one-time passwords) is generally perceived by people as a full-proof method to secure online accounts but it has been proven to be vulnerable time and again. Of course, it is difficult to get pass 2-step verification, so, cyber miscreants are now trying to trick people to provide verification codes or OTPs.

Delhi Police cybersecurity wing has alerted citizens of a scam SMS which can trick people to disclose the OTP or 2-step verification code of Google accounts. The SMS is well-worded and appears to be a genuine communication from Google. However, DCP Cybercrime through its official Twitter handle has warned netizens not to fall for it.

Interestingly, the SMS appears to actually protect the user by temporarily locking down the account. With the unified Google platform, anyone having the access to your Google account will basically have access to all mails, Google Drive files, photos, contacts and other personal information.
