As widely expected, a number of international cricketers have chosen their IPL franchises over their home teams for the upcoming Champions League Twenty20. The organisers of the CLT20 on Friday announced the final squads for the 2013 edition, to be played in India from September 17 to October 6, with 12 in-demand players having to choose between multiple teams.
They are follows : Dwayne Bravo (Chennai Super Kings over Trinidad & Togabo); Kevon Cooper (Rajasthan Royals over T&T); Nathan Coulter-Nile (Mumbai Indians over Perth Scorchers); Faf du Plessis and Albie Morkel (Chennai Super Kings over Titans); Mike Hussey (CSK over Perth); Mitchell Johnson (Mumbai over Brisbane Heat); Chris Morris (CSK over Highveld Lions); Thisara Perera (Sunrisers Hyderabad over Brisbane); Kieron Pollard (Mumbai over T&T); Kumar Sangakkara (Kandurata Maroons over Hyderabad); and Shane Watson (Rajasthan over Brisbane).
Kumar Sangakkara not to play for Sunrisers Hyderabad in CLT20:
"Players who were named by more than one team were asked to select which team they were going to play for. Teams were then allowed to replace any player that withdrew from their squad and elected to play for another side," said Dean Kino, a member of the CLT20 governing council, in a statement released on Friday. "CLT20 regulations state that when a player elects to play for their 'away' team, that team must pay the 'home' team $150,000 compensation per player. A 'home' team is classified as a team from the country a player is eligible to represent in international cricket."
While this payment is applicable to ten of the 12 cricketers eligible to play for multiple teams, Kino confirmed that there were two exceptions - the Sri Lankan pair of Sangakkara, who will be representing Kandurata Maroons (his home team) and Perera, who qualified for the Brisbane Heat and Hyderabad Sunrisers (neither of which is classified as his home team).
Watson expected to play for Rajasthan Royals in CLT20 :
The fifth edition of the tournament - which is the most lucrative T20 league in the world - will comprise ten teams and 29 matches and be preceded by a qualifying phase held from September 17-20 in Hyderabad which two teams will gain entry to the main round to compete with the others. The tournament all be spread across five cities - Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Ranchi and Ahmedabad; the last three will host CLT20 matches for the first time.
The group stage will consist of ten teams divided into two groups of five. Each side will play the other four in their group with the top two teams qualifying for the semi-finals. The prize money for the winner is $6 million.
The opening match will be followed by a double-header at Ranchi's JSCA International Stadium Complex on September 22. Brisbane Heat, winners of Australia's Big Bash League, will play Trinidad and Tobago, the domestic T20 champions from the West Indies, in the first game. Next, IPL 6 runners-up Chennai Super Kings will play Titans, South Africa's domestic T20 runners-up. The CLT20 final will be held at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi on October 6.
