The first season of the Celebrity Badminton League (CBL) was officially launched at a star-studded event in Chennai at the Leela Palace on Saturday. All the team owners and the players were present at the launch party, except for the Karnataka franchise.
As the situation between the two states over the Cauvery water-sharing issue still remains on tenterhooks, the team members of Karnataka Alps decided not to attend the event in person. However, they joined the event via video conference.
The recent protests in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have forced the organisers of the CBL to make some significant changes to their earlier plans. In fact, the inaugural match between Chennai and Bengaluru teams that was scheduled for Sunday has been deferred due to the issue. And another match between the teams which was to be played on October 7, will also be rescheduled for later dates. An announcement for the same will be made soon.
“Considering the current issues between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, all franchises along with the CBL management, have proposed two changes from the original schedule,” L Hemachandran, Founding Director and CEO of Celebrity Badminton League, said in a press release.
“Karnataka Alps is an integral part of the CBL season-1, as much as the others and all the teams are determined to play the sport in the right spirit. We have taken this decision as a responsible organisation to ensure peace and harmony on behalf of the board and franchise partners,” he added.
Now, the inaugural match of the CBL Season-1 will be played at Regional Sports Centre in Kochi on September 24.
The first season of the CBL only features teams from the South Indian film industries. The teams are Chennai Rockers, which will have the captaincy of actor Arya, Karnataka Alps will be led by Diganth, Kerala Royals will be headed by Jayram and Tollywood Thunders will be captained by Sudheer Babu.
The tournament follows the model of Indian Premiere League and has three categories: Men’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Women’s Doubles.
The organisers are confident that the CBL will be a success, and it will inspire the other Indian film industries to join the league in the next season.
