BT Sport boosts Premier League revenues

The revenue of English Premier League clubs broke the £3 billion mark for the first time in the 2013-14 season, according to consultancy firm Deloitte.

Dan Jones, head of Deloitte’s sports team, said the battle between broadcasters for Premier League rights was key to driving the league’s revenues higher. “The entry of BT Sport into the market to compete with BSkyB has applied huge upward pressure to broadcast revenue – from the 2013-14 season onwards each domestic live game on average generates broadcast revenue of £6.5 million,” he advised, suggesting it was clear that BT Sport’s entry was not a passing fad “but a serious, focused, long-term commitment”.

According to Deloitte’s Annual Review of Football Finance, on average, Premier League teams benefited from an extra £25 million in broadcast revenue. The broadcast rights are sold to the likes of Sky Sports and BT Sport by the Premier League. The money is then distributed to the 20 Premier League clubs based on the number of matches shown on live TV.

The £3 billion figure was hit just four years after passing £2 billion, with revenues doubling in seven years, according to Deloitte. “A remarkable achievement in isolation, but phenomenal in the wider economic context of that same period,” observed Jones.
