BSNL to provide free service in state for a week
NEW DELHI: Flood affected people of Jammu and Kashmir will get free telecom services for a week from state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) even as private mobile telecom players are offering 60 minutes of free talk time every day.
Announcing this on Saturday communications and information technology minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "Intra circle roaming will be permitted for 15 days in the state which means any mobile service provider can use any other's tower... We have installed five PCOs for free calls at the Srinagar airport along with WiFi hotspots. Barring Poonch, mobile services are available partially or substantially in other areas of the state," he added.
He was talking to mediapersons to mark 100 days of the new government. He said that 8,000 landlines in the state are now functioning. "Many of these are in the Barzulla area, which is heavily populated," said telecom secretary Rakesh Garg.Prasad also said that out of the total 12,306 base transceiver stations (BTS) or mobile towers in the state, 6,811 were submerged. About 1,208 have been restored.
On the government's flagship Digital India programme, Prasad on Saturday said there are three key areas that the government would focus on under this programme. The first will be digital empowerment of citizens, next a plan to provide governance and services on demand and lastly digital infrastructure as a utility to every citizen. He added a draft framework to promote fabless chip design, embedded software and board design industry in India has already been prepared.
In order to safeguard the nation's servers and computer systems, Prasad said that the government will soon start a National Cyber Co-ordination Centre (NCCC) envisaging an investment of Rs 800 crore. On the spectrum auction, Prasad said, "I have asked the department to expedite by the year end... at the most by the end of this financial year."
