Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will roll out 4G services in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode in March 2017, R. Mani, Chief General Manager, Kerala Circle has said.

The move will be part of the Phase 8 expansion at a pan-India level. During the phase, the 3G sites in the State would undergo a major expansion with the addition of 1,083 sites to the existing 2,756 sites, he said.

The operator would also launch various schemes to attract customers who ported out to other networks through the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) facility, Mr. Mani said.

BSNL, the second largest in the State with 80.5-lakh customer base in the mobile segment, had benefited through the MNP facility in the State with the operator recording a net increase of 8,33,269 mobile customers, he said.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Tuesday, he said the public sector company had introduced a new landline plan, Experience LL 49. The plan provided subscription at a fixed monthly charge of Rs.49 for the first six months, following which it would be converted into a general plan.

Besides offering a free prepaid SIM card, the plan would facilitate free calls for 24 hours on Sunday as well as free night calls. While an amount of Rs.600 will be charged for the instrument, there would be no installation charges.

Other promotional plans for broadband and fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) schemes had also been launched. Broadband ULD 1091 offered up to 40 GB at 8Mbps in the main secondary switching areas (SSAs) of Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kozhikode, and at 1 Mbps beyond the usage.

The FTTH plan, ULD 1045, offered up to 50 GB at 20 Mbps and 1 Mbps beyond. Moreover, ULS 1395, another FTTH plan, provided up to 75 GB at 20 Mbps and 1 Mbps beyond in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Palakkad SSAs.

As part of its customer-friendly initiatives, BSNL had made calls from its landline to any network free of charges from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. on all days of the week, the official said. It also commenced facilitating unlimited free calls from BSNL landline to any network on all Sundays. The ‘free to home’ call forwarding facility would enable customers to receive their mobile calls on a BSNL landline in Kerala free of costs.

He added BSNL Kerala, which had been meeting the key performance indicator (KPI) parameters set by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), had been certified to be the best in terms of quality of service of 2G/3G mobile network in Thiruvananthapuram. The independent drive test, conducted by the TRAI audit agency, covered various locations in the city over a distance of 350 kilometres.
