Rumours of the non-acceptance of 10 rupee coins turned out to be true in the state on Tuesday, when state-owned telecom operator BSNL issued an official notification that it would not be accepting the coin, along with two rupee notes, at its counters.
Chaos ensued at the BSNL bill desk on Tuesday as cashiers argued that because the
State Bank of India (SBI) had refused to accept cash deposits of 10 rupee coins and two rupee notes, they had no choice but to not accept bill payment with those currencies.
"We are now facing a problem. Earlier we had accepted these currencies from customers, but when the amounts had to be deposited at the bank, they were not accepting it," said BSNL accounts officer, Jayanta Shanyal.
The SBI Agartala Branch, said Shanyal, refused a good number of the old pink-coloured two rupee notes stating that the RBI had banned those in 2008. "For 10 rupee coins, SBI said that as per RBI instructions, those will be circulated in the market as medium of exchange among the customers by the bank. However, the bank will not accept deposits made with them," he said.
However, the SBI's regional manager for Tripura (urban), Dipak Choudhury , denied the interpretation of BSNL and said, "Neither the SBI nor the RBI have issued such an instruction to anybody."
