BlackBerry Messenger Adds Voice Chat

.

It’s not often that news of the latest BlackBerry software manages to catch our attention. Especially lately, when it’s seemed like the only interesting thing RIM is doing is preparing for the launch of BlackBerry 10, run-of-thee-mill software updates tend to get swept to the wayside. Today marks an exception to all that, though, as RIM has released a new beta of BlackBerry Messenger that delivers one very useful feature: voice chat.

BBM is a huge part of the BlackBerry experience for dedicated RIM fans, so adding new functionality to the app has the potential to reach a major slice of the platform’s users.

This new beta introduces what RIM’s calling BBM Voice. To take advantage of it, you and the party you’re calling will need to be running BB7 handsets, and both be connected over WiFi. Honestly, that latter restriction does make BBM Voice quite a bit less attractive, but we can’t particularly say we’re surprised; especially with BB10 around the corner, RIM can’t afford to be upsetting carriers now.

If you’re interested in giving BBM Voice a spin, the latest BBM beta is available in RIM’s Beta Zone.
