BlackBerry has finally launched two new Android-based smartphone in India called DTEK60 and DTEK50. The smartphones are priced at Rs 21,990 and 46,990, respectively. Touted as the world’s most secure smartphones, the BlackBerry DTEK60 and DTEK50 comes with an alert system that tells the user if their privacy is at risk. BlackBerry has tied up with Optemus to spread their market across the Indian market. The BalckBerry DTEK50 will be available starting this weekend while the DTEK60 will be available from next week.

The DTEK60 comes with fingerprint sensor which is missing from DTEK50. One of the main USPs of the phones is that; both the smartphones comes with DTEK Security App, which, according to BlackBerry keeps a check on the OS and the installed applications continuously. The main aim of the app is to alert users if their privacy is at risk. BlackBerry also claims that it has included an improved the bootloader that enables a secure boot process. Additionally, the app further notifies users whenever photos or videos are taken or text messages are sent from your smartphone without their knowledge.

After PRIV, the DTEK50 and DTEK60 are the second and third BlackBerry smartphone to run the Google OS. The DTEK60 brings hosts of new upgrades like when compared to the DTEK50. One of the changes can be noticed in the new standard of Type-C port, along with more RAM and internal storage. Both the DTEK50 and DTEK60 will also comes preloaded with BlackBerry Hub, a consolidated platform for communications such as including email, calendar, social, or phone calls.

Talking about both the phones, it’s worth noting that BlackBerry no longer manufactures hardware itself, focusing more on its software. The company outsources its hardware manufacturing requirements to other companies, and Alcatel is responsible for the manufacturing of the DTEK50 and DTEK60, which bears striking similarities to the Alcatel Idol 4 and Alcatel Idol 4S, at least when it comes to design and certain specifications. The DTEK50 runs Snapdragon 617 SoC paired with 3GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel camera. The DTEK60, on the other hand, is more powerful though, running the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC, with 4GB of RAM and a slightly better 21-megapixel camera. The Alcatel’s parent corporation TCL made the DTEK50, and the Canadian company intends to follow this trend going forward.

BlackBerry DTEK60 specifications

The smartphone features a 5.5-inch Quad HD scratch-resistant display, as compared to the DTEK50 that features a 5.2-inch full HD (1080p) display. It features a metal-frame and a dual-glass panel design. Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 64-bit quad-core processor which is paired with Adreno 530 and 4GB of RAM. Snapdragon 820 was last spotted on premium flagship smartphones like Mi5, Lenovo Z2 Plus, LG G5, Moto Z and OnePlus 3 to name a few. Also on offer is 32GB of internal storage which is expandable up to 2TB via microSD card.

On the photography front, the DTEK60 features a 21-megapixel auto-focus rear camera of aperture f/2.0 that is capable of 4K video recording at 30fps and slow-motion HD videos at 120fps. For selfies, the phone comes with an 8-megapixel front camera with f/2.2 aperture and 84-degree wide angle lens. The DTEK60 also offers a front flash, also called as the ‘selfie flash’ for well-lit selfies. Other camera features includes PDAF, HDR, fast focus lock, panorama, burst mode, live filters, face detection, video image stabilization, 4x digital zoom, and dual tone LED flash.

The DTEK60 is also the first BlackBerry smartphone to feature a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer. The smartphone is armed with a 3,000mAh battery that comes with Quick Charge 3.0 which the company claims is good enough to offer up to 26 hours of talk time and up to 17 hours of video playback. On the connectivity front, the smartphone comes with options like LTE, USB OTG, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS, and NFC. On the software front, the smartphone runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the-box. At its price point, the DTEK60 will face competitions with the likes of HTC 10 , LG G5 and Samsung Galaxy S7 .

BlackBerry DTEK50 specifications

The BlackBerry DTEK50, as mentioned earlier is a rebranded version of the Alcatel Idol 4, which comes with almost same set of specifications. The BlackBerry DTEK50 has a 5.2-inch full HD display with an oil-resistant coating to protect against fingerprint smudges. The smartphone runs Qualcomm 617 octa-core processor along with 3GB of RAM. Also on offer is a 16GB of internal storage, expandable up to 2TB via the microSD card.

On the camera front, the smartphone comes with 13-megapixel rear camera with auto-focus and an 8-megapixel front facing camera. Other camera features are continuous & touch to focus, face detection, video image stabilization, Panorama, Burst, Live filters.

The smartphone is powered by a 2,610mAh battery. BlackBerry claims that the smartphone will be able to offer up to 17 hours talktime, 12.8 days standby time, 40 hours audio playback and 8 hours video playback. On the software front, the smartphone comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the-box along with BlackBerry’s security, privacy and productivity suite integration. At its price point, the BlackBerry DTEK50 will compete with Xiaomi Mi 5 and LeEco Le Max2 .
