Top mobile phone operators Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India have warned that they could stay away from the upcoming bandwidth auctions if the government continued with the present cascading spectrum usage charge (SUC) regime, instead of moving to a flat fee structure.
"The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) had recommended a flat SUC. We would request the DoT (telecom department) to implement them. Otherwise there is no incentive for us to participate in the auction," Bharti Airtel's head of regulatory affairs Jyoti Pawar said on Friday.
She was speaking at a pre-bid meeting between mobile operators and DoT officials ahead of the auctions that start from January 23.
Interestingly, Reliance Jio Infocomm, the telecom unit of Reliance Industries, as well as foreign telecom operators not yet present in the country, gave the conference a miss, indicating they may keep away from the auctions as well.
The sector, despite being among the fastest growing markets in the world, has been mired in controversies such as the 2G scam, regulatory uncertainties and slowing growth amid competition.
