NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel on Friday said that it will increase the number of hundreds of points of interconnect (PoI) given to Reliance Jio, as per the bilateral agreement signed between both the telecom operators.

The comments comes after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (Trai) meeting with top telcos and Reliance Jio Infocomm on the points of interconnect (PoI) issue, which remained inconclusive amid high drama with GSM industry body COAI's Rajan Mathews not being allowed to be a part.

Airtel, in a statement, said that the traffic will inevitably get to a more balanced level and PoIs will be less of an issue, following the commercial charging of services by Reliance Jio, which is expected by Jan 1, 2017.

India's leading telecom operator added that it has been fully compliant with all regulatory guidelines and licence conditions in providing points of interconnect (PoI) to other operators. "None of the new operators, who have launched services in the last few years, have faced any PoI related issues with Airtel," the telco said.

Reliance Jio termed the ongoing tussle as a "fight for justice" and sought an adequate amount of points of interconnections (PoIs), which are used to connect calls from one telecom operator to another.

Reliance Jio Member of Board of Directors Mahendra Nahata, after Trai meeting, said, "It is a fight for justice for Indian customers, and not those of Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone or Idea." He added that the company has asked for the accessibility of the 'right quantity of points of interconnections' from the regulator.

Bharti Airtel has urged the Trai to find a way to curb the massive asymmetric traffic to ensure that receiving networks are not abused by tsunami of free traffic. "In this regard, IUC is an effective tool in the hands of TRAI, which we hope they will use judiciously," it said.

"We are grateful to the TRAI for enabling a constructive dialogue today on the matter of providing PoIs to Reliance Jio and appreciating all the issues on the table. We would request the TRAI to also engage on the subject of a fair IUC regime and ensure that the practice of pricing is in compliance with the 30th Amendment of the Telecom Tariff Order dated January 16, 2004, which envisages tariffs to be IUC compliant, non-predatory and non-discriminatory," Bharti Airtel said.
