It's not because of something... Last time as well they haven't released the notification in time, so, they had to extend Dravid's contract as they don't have any time to conduct any formal process... This is just to have enough time to test the waters and see if they can get any better options.

Doing the same mistake of appointing same coach for all 3 formats. Your white ball coach should be different especially T20 coaching is a specialist job. And I hope it's a fair and transparent process and not just done for formality. Still remember when they rejected Jonty Rhodes for fielding coach once!

I would say appoint a coach for the more traditional formats (Test, ODIs) and another one for the evolving formats (T20Is).
Dravid would be perfect to continue with the traditional formats, and someone else can take up T20Is..

With the increasing number of T20Is in the FTP calendar, it makes perfect sense to do so..
