MUMBAI: The drop in media rights revenue notwithstanding, the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) profit for the financial year 2013–14 has jumped 67 per cent. This has been aided by an increase in revenue from the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Champions League T20 along with a corresponding decline in expenditure on cricket operations.
The cricket board posted a profit of Rs 526 crore (Rs 5.26 billion) during the fiscal compared to Rs 312 crore (Rs 3.12 billion) a year ago. Income from operations increased 44 per cent to Rs 1194 crore (Rs 11.94 billion) from Rs 892 crore (Rs 8.92 billion) in the earlier year.
On the expenditure front, the cost of cricket operations decreased six per cent to Rs 516 crore (Rs 5.16 billion) from Rs 551 crore (Rs 5.51 billion) in the corresponding fiscal.
The BCCI’s media rights revenue dipped 46 per cent to Rs 419 crore (Rs 4.19 billion) from Rs 774 crore (Rs 7.74 billion) as Team India played only one international series at home during the fiscal, the PTI report quoting an unnamed BCCI source said.
Revenue from cash cow IPL stood at Rs 844 crore (Rs 8.44 billion), up 52 per cent from Rs 556 crore (Rs 5.56 billion) a year ago. IPL’s less popular cousin, CL T20, also witnessed a moderate increase as revenue jumped to Rs 327 crore (Rs 3.27 billion) from Rs 279 crore (Rs 2.79 billion).
Franchise fee increased to Rs 502 crore (Rs 5.02 billion) from Rs 460 crore (Rs 4.6 billion). The annual gross receipts from international tours dipped to Rs 193 crore (Rs 1.93 billion) from Rs 216 crore (Rs 2.16 billion). The revenue from sponsorship distributed to the Indian cricketers was cut down drastically to Rs 11 crore (Rs 110 million) from Rs 49 crore (Rs 490 million).
The BCCI recorded a budget surplus of Rs 391 crore (Rs 3.91 billion) as it enchashed the Rs 133 crore (Rs 1.33 billion) bank guarantee of Sahara Group-owned IPL franchise Pune Warriors India, which was terminated last year.
