RE: BCCI officialy announced CLT20 stopped

After six editions that generated lukewarm interest from fans, the Champions League T20 has been discontinued. The tournament's governing council, comprising representatives of the BCCI, CSA and CA, made the decision unanimously on Wednesday. According to a BCCI release, the governing council determined that the discontinuation was "the most appropriate decision due to the tournament's limited public following".

The 2015 edition, scheduled for September and October, will not go ahead.

"This has been a difficult decision as the Champions League T20 provided added context to a number of domestic Twenty 20 competitions around the world such as the IPL in India, Big Bash League in Australia and South Africa's Ram Slam T20," said Anurag Thakur, the BCCI secretary. "It was a fantastic platform for players from around the world to showcase their talent and the participating teams thoroughly enjoyed the experience over the last six seasons.

"Unfortunately, off the field, Champions League T20 wasn't sustaining the interest of the fans as we had hoped. This decision was made, after consultation with all our commercial partners and meeting the contractual obligations of all parties involved. The Governing Council would like to thank everyone involved with the CLT20 and all those who participated in the tournament.

"Further details associated with winding down the league including settling with the three nations that had invested time and effort in the competition, will be completed very soon."

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is set to appeal against former Chief Justice of India RC Lahoti’s report asking the board to pay Rs 550 crore to the now defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala for alleged breach of contract. Also, as reported by the Express first, it was decided during the IPL governing council meeting to have an all IPL-team CLT20.

“A mini-IPL is what we’ve come up with,” said a top governing council official. Whether it would involve an overseas team is yet to be decided. “As of now it’s an all-IPL team event and will most likely be held in the UAE.”
Besides the CLT20, the governing council deliberated on the report submitted by Lahoti last week. “We have our rights and discussed as to how we can tackle the issue,” the official said. The BCCI has decided to appeal to High Court as it reckons the report hasn’t looked into their side of the story. “We have got arbitrator Lahoti’s report. Majority of us are for appealing against the report. We are seeking legal opinion,” said the official.

In 2011, the BCCI had terminated the IPL FRANCHISE on the basis of breach of contract regarding ownership issues and encashed the bank guarantee provided by the team management.

The FRANCHISE, formed by five companies under the umbrella Rendezvous Sports World, was acquired for $333.33 million (Rs 156 crore) in 2010 and joined the IPL in 2011. The board had asked the FRANCHISE to furnish a bank guarantee and despite extended deadlines, they failed to produce one. As result, the IPL governing council terminated the contract. The FRANCHISE by then had paid the BCCI Rs 340 crore with players’ fees yet to be paid. The board also encashed the bank guarantee provided by the franchise earlier. This move was termed illegal by the franchise and it went to the arbitration of Lahoti.

The board feels it’s been hard done as it thinks all procedures were followed when the contract was terminated. “The board gave the franchise six months to provide a bank guarantee. But they kept missing deadlines. The board was forced to use the guarantee provided by the franchise in 2010 to pay the players. We will appeal against the arbitrator’s report,” the member said. There are also indications that the franchise wants to get reinstated but that will happen only if they file a plea before the court or if the BCCI’s appeal is taken by the court and the matter is put forth in front.

Mini IPL Plans

It’s also learnt that instead of Champions League T20, a new tournament involving all eight IPL teams will take place in September. As reported by this newspaper on May 29, the teams will be divided into two groups and the top four will make it to the semifinals. Though an official decision is yet to be communicated to CLT20 stakeholders — Cricket South Africa and Cricket Australia — the BCCI is likely to take a call at its working committee meeting later this month.

We are yet to talk to CSA and CA and if we fail to reach a mutual agreement, we could also take the tournament to South Africa. The tournament will likely to happen in September and there is a two-week window available,” the official said.

The Champions League T20, which official broadcaster Star India wants to let go because of its loss-making nature, is still not killed. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will take a decision on the Champions League T20 only after consultation with Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa (CSA), Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Rajeev Shukla said after a governing council meeting. There was buzz in the media that CL T20 was being scrapped in favour of a mini-IPL. However, Shukla cleared the air by saying that no such decision has been taken yet. “No discussion on CLT20 scrapping. Any decision on CLT20 can only be taken at the CLT20 governing council, which comprises CSA and CA. It will be taken at that forum,” he told PTI. Star India has requested the BCCI to scrap the tournament as it is not garnering enough viewership.
