THE BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION (BBC) announced its first BBC Weather app for iOS and Android on Monday.

Looking to replace the preloaded weather app found on iPhone and Android devices, the BBC claims that its app offers "accurate" and "in-depth" forecast information, and arrives due to an influx of BBC weather views from mobile devices.

Fire up the BBC Weather app and it will immediately detect your location and give you an overview of the weather conditions, the BBC said, as well as offering quick access to the five-day, three-hour and hourly forecasts for those that like to keep a keen eye on the weather.

The BBC has also squeezed in information such as UV and pollen counts, wind speed and humidity, which it boasts are great for making the most of events such as the Glastonbury Festival. However, take our advice and do not take your iPhone or Android smartphone to a festival, it will only end badly.

Android users will also be treated to a BBC Weather widget that they can add to their home screen. iPhone owners, obviously, won't have the option of a widget unless Apple adds this functionality in iOS 7. Owners of a Samsung Galaxy S4, for example, will also be able to share weather information with friends over NFC.

Liz Howell, Head of BBC Weather said, "The new BBC Weather app is the perfect companion for this summer's great British sport and music events. We know that our audiences really want that at-a-glance forecast when they're out and about, with the option of digging for further detail when they need or want to.

"That's exactly what we've delivered, squeezing in all of our trusted data into an app that's simple to use and looks fantastic."

The BBC Weather app is available to download for free from the iTunes App Store and Google Play, respectively. There's no word on whether the BBC will release the app for Blackberry 10 or Windows Phone 8.
