Mumbai Autorickshawmens Union has threatened an indefinite strike from June 18 to protest planned introduction of quadricycles, delay in implementation of fare hike as approved by Hakim Committee and reduction in the maximum age of autos to 16 years.
Citing the increase in consumer price index in 2013, union president Sharad Rao said the cost per km had increased from Rs 9.9 to Rs 10.38 and demanded that the base fare be increased from Rs 15 to Rs 16.
Earlier, the union supported by owners and drivers of 7.5 lakh autos in the state had threatened a 72-hour strike from June 18. However, now it will march in protest on June 12 from Jijamata Udyan to Azad Maidan.
Rao said if the government failed to respond positively to its demands, the union will start an indefinite statewide strike.
Slamming the quadricycles proposal, he said, "The government has reduced the age of autos to force drivers to buy quadricycles."
He said the four-wheelers would add to road congestion. "We want the government to withdraw the sanction to quadricycles."
