Luke Pomersbach arrested for molesting Indian-American woman

NEW DELHI: Another huge controversy on Friday struck the IPL with an Australian player with Royal Challengers Bangalore being arrested on charges of molesting an Indian-American woman and severely attacking her fiancee leaving him in hospital.

27-year-old Australian player Luke Pomersbach allegedly misbehaved with the woman, a US citizen of Indian origin, at the Maurya Sheraton Hotel on Thursday night and has been arrested, police said.

A case has been registered against him under various sections of IPC including section 354 of IPC (outraging modesty of woman), 323 (hurt), 454 (lurking house trespass) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment).

The woman said the player invited himself for some drinks with the couple and some common friends from Mumbai in their room.

She left the men alone and went to her bedroom for catching some sleep but Luke followed her and misbehaved with her, she alleged.

When her fiancee intervened, Luke allegedly beat him up, she said.

The woman's fiancee has been admitted to a hospital. The woman claimed that pressure is being mounted on her to withdraw the case but she will not do so.

IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla said the IPL had nothing to with this because the incident did not take place in any party organised by it.

"Let the law take its course," he said. Denying the charge that IPL was full of controversies, Shukla said IP 4 and 5 were free of controversies till now.

However, BJP MP and former cricketer Kirti Azad alleged that the IPL "has given rise to many unsavoury things. Today's attempt to rape is one such".

He said foreign players were taking advantage of the conditions in India.

The IPL was rocked by controversy on Thursday when Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan faced the prospect of being banned from the Wankhede stadium after an alleged scuffle with Mumbai Cricket Association officials.

Who is Luke Pomersbach?

Luke Pomersbach, who plays for the IPL side Royal Challengers Bangalore, was arrested for allegedly molesting a woman from the US and allegedly beating up her boyfriend at the Delhi five-star hotel, the Maurya Sheraton, on Thursday.

This, however, isn't the 27-year-old's first off-field misdemeanour. The talented Australian cricketer's career has been hampered by regular skirmishes with the authorities. (Also see: Luke Pomersbach profile page)

In November 2007, Pomersbach and fellow Western Warrior Shaun Marsh were suspended from the state side for drinking alcohol following a game against Queensland.

In August 2009, Pomersbach was involved in a drink and driving case. He was arrested and charged by police with failing to stop, failing to accompany police, driving with a blood alcohol level in excess of .08, assaulting a public officer, obstructing police and escaping legal custody. He pleaded guilty and was fined and had his driver's licence cancelled. The Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) responded by suspending him indefinitely.

Pomersbach signed with the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League in June 2011. However, in October 2011 Pomersbach backed out of the Western Australia and Scorchers contract to deal with depression. Pomersbach has also been to a rehabilitation centre for an alcohol problem.

Pomersbach made his international debut in the most remarkable way. He was called into Australia's T20 side in Perth in December 2007 after Brad Hodge injured his back while bending over to pull on his trousers. Pomersbach, who was not in the squad, was called in as a replacement just as he was parking his car to attend the game as a spectator. He went on to hit a six on his way to 15 from seven balls as Australia beat New Zealand. Incidentally, this T20 game remains his sole international appearance for the Kangaroos.

Pomersbach won the 2008 Bradman Young Player of the Year and was picked up by IPL side Kings XI Punjab for the 2008-09 season. He made 152 in five innings, only once being dismissed, for Punjab.

Woman says Luke Pomersbach tried to kiss her
New Delhi: The US citizen, who was allegedly molested by IPL Royal Challengers Bangalore cricketer Luke Pomersbach, on Friday alleged that the player tried to kiss her and punched her fiance several times after they refused to have a drink with him.

The woman was allegedly molested and her fiance was beaten up by Pomersbach late on Thursday at a five-star hotel here after an IPL party.

"I am not sure about his full name. But he tagged along with us after the party and (insisted) that we have few drinks with him. He told something to my fiance and I did not like," the victim told reporters on Friday.

The woman said she felt "uncomfortable" by the "dirty, nasty looks" of the cricketer and told her fiance that he can have drinks with him if he wishes.

"When I tried to turn around and go to my room, he grabbed my hand and tried to kiss me. My fiance said 'listen, she is not any girl like that. Just leave and go back to your room'," she said.

At this, the player turned around and started beating up him several times and punched him on his face, she alleged.

"He got injured in his ears. He is not able to hear properly. He was bleeding," she said.

She said the IPL player was talking to her fiance saying that he wants to have few drinks with us.

"Then we left for our room and we thought he had gone to his room but he came upstairs tagging along with us. He asked us to help him around and telling my fiance that lets go and have drinks," she said.

"He (fiance) is a nice guy and he did not want to say No. He just said fine, but....," she said

NEW DELHI: Australian cricketer Luke Pomersbach, who has been accused of molesting an American woman and assaulting her fiance, on Saturday said that he was "very relieved" to have been granted bail and has full faith in the judicial system in India.
