Australia include uncapped Bancroft, Fekete in squad for Bangladesh Tests
September 13 2015

Cameron Bancroft was in superlative touch during the 'A' tour of India.
Australia named uncapped Western Australia batsman Cameron Bancroft and Tasmania pacer Andrew Fekete in the Test squad for next month's tour of Bangladesh. The two Test series against the sub-continent side will mark the first full assignment for Steven Smith after taking over as full-time skipper of the Australian Test side. 34-year old Adam Voges, who made his Test debut during the tour of West Indies, was named vice-captain of a side that saw a mass exodus of senior players following the 2-3 Ashes defeat.
Feteke and Bancroft impressed in the Australia A's recent tour of India. 30-year Fekete ended with 37 wickets at 24.10 in last year's Sheffield Shield. And more recently in India, bowling on pitches that offered little assistance to the fast bowlers, he was remarkably consistent with his lines and picked up five wickets from the two four-day games. 22-year old Bancroft meanwhile, who notched up a stylish 150 in Chennai, has widely been touted as Australia's next great batting hope.
"Cameron is a player who impressed everyone on the recent A tour of India," Chairman of Selectors Rodney Marsh said. "He can bat for long periods of time and scored an outstanding 150 against India A in Chennai. On that tour he played spin well, fielded brilliantly at bat-pad and his whole demeanour was that of a player who is determined to play Test cricket.
"He scored almost 900 first-class runs last season, hes young, hungry and he could become a very good player for us over a long period of time."
There were returns to the Test squad for Usman Khawaja, Joe Burns, and limited overs specialist Glenn Maxwell while the Australia's selection committee also decided to include Stephen O'Keefe as the side's second specialist spinner, behind Nathan Lyon.
"Stephen did well on the A tour," Marsh said. "We felt he bowled exceptionally well. It's true that Fawad (Ahmed) didn't get many opportunities in either the West Indies or on the Ashes tour but when he did get them he didn't bowl as well as I'm sure he would have wanted.
Meanwhile, as was widely expected, both Mitchell Johnson and Josh Hazlewood were left out of the side to give them sufficient rest ahead of the long home season that includes Tests against New Zealand and West Indies."Mitchell Johnson and Josh Hazlewood were not considered for the tour as, after heavy workloads over the past six months and with a significant amount of cricket to come, we wanted to make sure they are right to go at the start of our domestic summer," Marsh said.
"The retirements of five players from the squad that went on the Ashes tour, as well as issues of injury, form and conditions have brought about a major change in the profile of the touring party from the one that toured the British Isles," Marsh opined. "But with that change comes a fantastic opportunity for all the players going to Bangladesh.
"They are going as a young group with seven of the players aged 26 or less, and all 15 have the opportunity to kick on and, in the case of Cameron Bancroft and Andrew Fekete, kick off their Test careers and establish themselves as the core of the side for years to come."
The two-Test series starts in Chittagong on October 9 with the second Test to be played from October 17 in Dhaka.
