Adelaide likely to host historic Ashes day-night Test

A historic first day-night Ashes Test is likely to be held in Adelaide next year after England reportedly bought into the concept.

Cricket Australia (CA) is set to officially announce next summer's blockbuster schedule within the fortnight but the provisional itinerary has Brisbane resuming as the host of the opening match after this year's ill-fated switch to Perth.

Australia has not lost a Test at the Gabba since 1988 but the Brisbane Test was moved back because of the day-night fixture against Pakistan which starts on December 15. Subsequently, Australia lost in Perth to South Africa, the first time they had were defeated in an opening Test of the Australian summer since 1988.

After successfully hosting the day-night fixture for the last two seasons, Adelaide, which is earmarked as the second Ashes Test, is almost certain to host the match under lights.

England have not yet publicly committed to playing under lights during the Ashes but it is understood they have agreed in principle, according to Fairfax Media.

Earlier this year, Alastair Cook, the England captain, and his Australian counterpart Steve Smith publicly stated their preference for the Ashes Tests to remain day fixtures. England will host their first day-night Test against West Indies in Edgbaston in August.

James Sutherland, CA chief executive, recently stated an Ashes day-night fixture was a possibility. "I think the indications are with (England]) having a Test match in Birmingham under day-night conditions, that's a sign they are clearly thinking there could be day-night Test cricket bobbing up in parts of the world when they have away tours," Sutherland said in an interview with ABC Radio during the Adelaide Test last week.

The venue for the Perth Test, slated for the Third Ashes Test, is unknown and may not be finalised when the schedule is confirmed. There have been plans for the new Perth Stadium, a 60,000 capacity stadium in Burswood, to be open in time for the Ashes but is now likely to be launched to coincide with the start of the Australian football season in 2018.

"Piecing together the summer schedule is a complex task," a CA spokesman said on Wednesday (November 30). "We expect to be in a position to announce this schedule over the coming months once agreements are in place. We have two day-night Tests this year and ongoing scheduling of day-night Tests in the Australian summer is a natural progression. The Ashes is a great contest and attracts huge audiences both at the ground and on television, but nothing has yet been confirmed for next summer."

WACA to host third Ashes Test

The Perth Ashes Test will be held at the WACA after the Western Australian government revealed that the new Perth Stadium would not be ready for the December fixture.

On Wednesday (May 10), WA Sports Minister Mick Murray said the 60,000-seat stadium located in Burswood would not be finished in time to host the third Test, which starts on December 14. Apart from the Perth Test, tickets for the series have been released to the public.

Vince recalled, Stokes included in Ashes squad

Pattinson ruled out of the Ashes

James Pattinson’s bid to make a comeback to international cricket received yet another setback after the Australian paceman re-aggravated a stress fracture of the lower back that will force him to take an indefinite break for recovery.

Cricket Australia confirmed on Wednesday that Pattinson, who was in Australia’s Champions Trophy squad but did not figure in the XI, had been ruled out of the Ashes, beginning in Brisbane next month.

Pattinson, 27, has had a long history of injuries and was recently withdrawn from the drawn Test series in Bangladesh as Cricket Australia sought to monitor and manage his pain. This was following a reasonably successful stint with Nottinghamshire in Division Two of the English County Championship, where he took 12 wickets in two first-class games.

Stokes not to travel with England squad for Ashes - Cricbuzz

Ben Stokes has been temporarily withdrawn from England's Ashes squad, due to further pending investigation into the street brawl that the all-rounder found himself in. He will not travel with the team to Australia, but a final decision on his participation wasn't taken.

Steve Finn, in the meantime, has been drafted in as his replacement, it was announced on Friday (October 6).
It was also learnt, however, that Stokes retained his central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board for 2017-18.
