Arafat Sunny was arrested by Bangladesh police in Dhaka after he allegedly posted sensitive photos on social media, according to reports on Sunday (January 22). Sunny's girlfriend had filed a complaint with the authorities about the left-arm spinner creating a fake account and posting pictures that hurt her reputation.
"She said Sunny opened up a fake Facebook account of hers and posted their personal photos, which she found offensive and defamatory," Jamaluddin Mir, the local police chief, confirmed. "We have arrested him and sent him to the court, seeking to take him into custody for five days for questioning."
Nizamuddin Chowdhury, the Bangladesh Cricket Board chief executive, however refused to comment. "It seems to be a personal matter. We don't want to comment now. However, we are observing (the situation)," he said.
Sunny, if the charges are proved, faces 14 years in jail or or a fine of 10 million taka (US$ 126,340). He now becomes the third Bangladesh player to be involves in such a controversy Rubel Hossain, who was charged for rape, and Shahdat Hossain, who was accused to torching his maid.
Sunny has 16 One-Day Internationals to his name and has also featured in 10 Twenty20 Internationals. He was suspended from bowling in international cricket during the T20 WC in India but cleared later last year.
